Sushi Shikon To Move To The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s only three-Michelin-starred sushi restaurant will relocate in early May and become neighbours with the newly reopening Amber.

Sushi Shikon, Hong Kong’s only sushi restaurant to achieve the highest three Michelin star accolade, is the brainchild of Wa Creation’s Luke Clayton and chef Masahiro Yoshitake of three-Michelin-starred Sushi Yoshitake in Tokyo. Sushi Shikon opened in 2012 specialising in Edomae sushi and for the past seven years has occupied a shop space in Jervois Street in Sheung Wan. But come early May, the restaurant will bid farewell to its current location and move to The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, where two-Michelin-starred Amber will also be re-opening after a radical revamp.

Executive chef of Sushi Shikon Yoshiharu Kakinuma is very much looking forward to the big move: “I am very excited about this new chapter and it warms my heart to be able to offer an even better experience to our loyal guests.”

To chef Kakinuma, the current location is very small and does not allow them the opportunity to provide a full sensory experience for their guests.

A Better Experience

The main reason for the move, explains Kakinuma, is to offer a more enhanced dining experience for his guests. He says that the current location is very small and does not allow them the opportunity to provide a full sensory experience for their guests. Moreover, the small footprint also meant a small kitchen that was too cramped for the team.

“The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong offers us an elevated space where we can provide a fantastic visual journey to our guests. We are bringing in an exceptional amount of Japanese artisan work, including paintings, pottery and plaster work, that will elevate the entire Sushi Shikon experience,” he says.

The new location offers just eight seats along the sushi counter and six more in a private dining room, which will also have its own sushi counter. This is unlike the private room in the current location which is mainly used for meetings before or after the meal.
Gratitude To Guests

Kakinuma says that the decision to move comes from a place of love and gratitude for its loyal guests and staff. “Our elevated culinary experience will remain the same, but now at the new location, it will be served alongside a more elegant visual experience.”

New Offerings At The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong

Besides Amber and Sushi Shikon, the hotel will also be unveiling two new restaurants — modern Japanese Kappo Rin and all-day dining restaurant SOMM.

Kappo Rin, opened in collaboration with chef Masahiro Yoshitake, focuses on Kappo cuisine, in which both cooked and raw items are prepared to highlight the inherent flavours of ingredients imported fresh daily from Japan. The word “kappo” means “‘to cut and to cook” and Kappo cuisine involves a multi-course meal that is left entirely up to the chef, who will use numerous cooking methods to best bring out the seasonality and quality of ingredients. The cuisine also emphasises the importance of presentation and sequence of each dish in the meal. Kappo Rin will offer traditional and seasonal Japanese dishes served in an elegant, calm and sensorial eight-seat setting.

All-day dining restaurant SOMM will offer a diverse selection of over 1,600 types of champagne, wine and sake, including rare types of sake that are being exported from Japan for the first time. The restaurant will open from 7.30am in the morning till 11.30pm at night and serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails.

All restaurants are set to open in early May. The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong is also offering a Great Gourmet Escape Room Package for a minimum stay of two nights. The dining experience includes a seven-course dinner for two at Amber, champagne breakfast for two at SOMM and priority reservations at Sushi Shikon and Kappo Rin.
