The first thing you’ll notice about Gothenburg’s Avalon Hotel — even before stepping inside — is the pool. Equipped with a transparent bottom and sides, it seems to float in midair over Kungsportsplatsen, protruding a few meters over the building’s façade. And the rest of the hotel is no less high-concept. This Scandinavian design hotel is “feng shui certified,” with special attention paid to how furnishings, light, scent, and sound affect guests, both mind and body. (That pool, for example, includes a 24-carat belt of gold mosaic tiles that supposedly brings swimmers happiness and prosperity.) Rooms are equally well thought out, with spacious open-plan bathrooms, vibrant art, and lots of natural light — three of them even include their own compact in-room gyms.
