Located right by the Todoroki Station level crossing, diners can savour exquisite unagi in a Meiji-era house. Unagi is prepared in the jiyaki style. This un-steamed, direct-grilling method is favoured in western Japan to showcase the aroma of the charcoal fire. The unaju selections are named for Fukurokuju, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. The ‘Kotobuki’ selection (representing the “ju” in Fukurokuju and symbolising health and longevity) features a half-and-half pairing of unseasoned shirayaki and richly glazed kabayaki, side by side like a married couple. The ‘Fuku’ and ‘Roku’ options are equally auspicious.
