MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Luminaries like author Masako Shirasu, film director Kon Ichikawa, kabuki actors, geisha and maiko come here for soba, udon or rice while taking in the atmosphere of Gion. At the core is the dashi, using a recipe passed down from the founder; ample quantities of kombu and katsuo-bushi are used for a rich umami flavour. The noodles are boiled soft, Kyoto-style, so as to pick up the dipping sauce well. The salty-sweet oyakodon is a popular dish.
