Rejuvenated by architects Yoshifumi Nakamura and Akira Minagawa, Kyo no Onkokoro’s Nishijin Vila #5 is a modernized townhome that once belonged to a late-Meiji period textile merchant. While the historic warehouse is still on the lot, the home’s other facilities are strikingly modern, with a fully-equipped contemporary kitchen and a futuristic stall shower on its second floor. This Nishijin Villa has capacity for up to eight guests, with two bedrooms sleeping four comfortably and two traditional Japanese rooms with tatami mats available for traditional futon bedding. The centerpiece of the house is its courtyard; a natural scene of manicured maple, moss and low-growing leaves takes center stage around decking, out onto which several rooms open. Perhaps no place is better to view the scene than through the window of the personal soaking tub.
