Modern Design & Lively
It wasn’t so long ago that hotels like this were mainly a phenomenon of a select few major world capitals. (You know, places like Dublin.) But now news of the boutique-hotel revolution has reached southwestern Ireland, and in fine style, too. On a hill high above Cork’s city center is the Montenotte Hotel, an 18th-century estate transformed into a very 21st-century luxury boutique hotel.
In the Montenotte’s case this means a contemporary design update that’s playful and eclectic but still respectful of its setting. Bold colors and graphic elements liven the stately old house, and there’s a light, whimsical edge to the furnishings, which marry classic silhouettes with vivid contemporary prints. And to the original house’s bedrooms have lately been added a new slate of modern cabins, containing the River Suites and the Woodland Suites, the former with views of the River Lee and Cork’s rooftops, the latter immersed in the lush greenery of the Montenotte estate.
The Montenotte’s gardens are a particular highlight, as is the Panorama Bistro & Terrace — both take great advantage of the hotel’s elevated perspective. There’s a health club as well, with a 20-meter pool, a gym, and a sauna, steam room, and a jacuzzi, and treatments are available in the Bellevue Spa. And, in what’s quickly becoming a luxury-boutique must-have, the Montenotte comes with its very own cinema, a well-appointed screening room that’s available for hire in addition to its regular programming.
