MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Jardin Escondido isn’t just another boutique hotel in Buenos Aires. It’s Francis Ford Coppola’s boutique hotel in Buenos Aires. The legendary film director reportedly fell in love with the Argentinian capital while shooting the film Tetro in 2008, when he lived and worked in the spacious townhouse that’s now known as Jardin Escondido. His latest venture is clearly a personal project that brings a few of his favorite things to the chic neighborhood of Palermo Soho — fine wines, small luxuries, and quiet corners to sit and write.

The hotel’s name means “hidden garden” in Spanish, an appropriate moniker given the abundance of greenery throughout Jardin Escondido’s various terraces, courtyards, and balconies. The place feels warm and stylish — down-to-earth materials like brick and wood beams add a rustic twist to fine linens, sophisticated lighting, and plush sofas. Eye-catching South American artworks and objects, like Peruvian weavings and masks from Argentina’s northwest, add to the impression that you’re visiting the vacation home of a rich and well-traveled friend. First-class stemware and the classic film collection remind you that it’s Coppola’s place.

Jardin Escondido comprises six bedrooms, but guests can’t rent just one: either you reserve the whole hotel, or you take a section that contains either two or four rooms. You won’t come into contact with staff members unless you want to — service is attentive but discreet. The hotel’s personal sommelier is on call when you crave Cabernet and a gourmet chef is always ready to prepare a full asado (barbecue) on the terrace’s grill. This unconventional getaway is a paradise-like enclave in the middle of a big city, designed for lazy days of reading by the small pool or kicking back after a gluttonous steak dinner.

How to get there:
Jardin Escondido is located 31km/19m (1 hour) from the Ezeiza International Airport and 7km/4m (20 min) from Jorge Newbery Airport. Transfers can be organized for US$80 for up to 2 guests from Ezeiza Airport and US$50 from Jorge Newbery Airport.
