MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

The old real estate mantra of “location, location, location” may not seem applicable in Tuscany, where there are virtually no undesirable locations. But in the case of the Poggio Piglia, a strategic position — southeast of Siena on the road to Rome, on a fertile hilltop planted with olive groves and grape vines, overlooking the famous Tuscan countryside — is a huge selling point. And make no mistake, the plan for this elegant getaway was strategic: the owners spent seven years bringing their vision to life.

The vision, in this case, involves mixing the best of the old world — the romantic silhouette of a stone country house, sweeping pastoral views, olive oil and wine produced on the premises — with modern sophistication. The interiors aren’t cozy and rustic, as is standard in the region, but rather crisp and minimalist, filled with artwork and sculptural furniture. Arched doorways, stone walls and wood-beamed ceilings remind you where you are; the floor-to-ceiling windows, sparkling infinity pool, and modern restaurant, with its contemporary chef and cool Kartell Ghost chairs, remind you what year it is. Guest rooms are spacious, with romantic fireplaces, parquet flooring and pristine glass-encased showers. The Independent Villa, set apart from the main building and surrounded by olive trees, is splurge-worthy, with panoramic views that might inspire you to quit your day job and start life over in Italy.

Half the joy of staying at Poggio Piglia lies in a pleasure as old as the hills, quite literally — ruby-hued Sangiovese wine, produced onsite, flows by the barrelful. The house specialty pairs well with the classic pastas and meats served in the hotel’s restaurant; it’s just as delicious served solo, or with fresh bread and olive oil, also made here, seated on the terrace. Drink in the wine, and the views; despite the modern design twists, the place feels like a timeless paradise.

Please note: Poggio Piglia is a seasonal hotel, open from late March until the end of October.
