Modern Design 和 Quiet
Torre Virreyes, one of the last works of the celebrated architect Teodoro González de León, looks like the tallest building in Mexico City. It isn’t; in fact it’s not even close. But looming high over the Bosque de Chapultepec, one of the largest urban parks in the Americas, this trapezoid-shaped skyscraper — home to the Alexander Hotel — dwarfs everything around it.
Needless to say, Alexander offers spectacular views over the park and the city skyline, not least of all because the design is airy and modern, all high ceilings and massive glass panes that stay miraculously pristine and smudge-free. Unlike many of the city’s luxury hotels, Alexander isn’t loyal to Mexican tradition of any kind. The custom-made furniture is Italian, the high-end bath products are Swedish, and the caviar bar is the only one of its kind in the city. Indeed, the list of in-room amenities reads like a who’s-who of international luxury brands: sound systems by Bang & Olufsen, lighting by Lutron, Dyson hairdryers, Nespresso machines, and so on. The best of everything, in other words, to befit the hotel’s spacious suites with their spa-like marble bathrooms and treetop vistas.
Alexander’s sleek Caviar Bar is a place for Mexico City’s elite to see and be seen, but it’s also a fanciful spot to sip craft cocktails and enjoy the view. The hotel also has a restaurant specializing in elevated Mexican cuisine, a European-style spa, and personal trainers on call. It’s equally rewarding, however, to borrow an e-bike and take a spin through the sprawling park that spreads out before the hotel, a seemingly neverending expanse of greenery just waiting to be explored.
