Bourou Noguchi, in the Hokkaido city of Noboribetsu, is a fascinating reimagining of Japanese hot spring resorts. While ryokan traditions certainly have their place, Bourou Noguchi shakes off some of the more rigid customs, opting for a modernist re-interpretation. Designed by award-winning architect Makoto Nakayama with contributions from artist Takenobu Igarashi, Bourou Noguchi’s vision is that of a sober, reflective resort experience. Rooms are intimate, with clean lines and modern amenities, each with its own private onsen — but don’t miss the stunning public onsen, whose open-air atmosphere extends into the treetops above. Meals are extensive kaiseki affairs, with exquisite preparation and highly aesthetic presentation.
