The French-style Auberge Tosayama is proof that a ryokan isn’t the only way to host guests in a wooded sanctuary like the mountain idyll that surrounds Kochi City. This eye-catching, secluded luxury hotel contains just 12 rooms, each one with views of the forest, as well as four villas, each sleeping up to six. The style is contemporary, but always rooted in Japanese tradition, right down to the yukata robes. There’s a bar, a lounge, and a restaurant serving delicate Japanese dishes made from hyperlocal ingredients. The spa offers a sauna as well as a hot spring bath, and guests are free to borrow bicycles or catch the shuttle into town.
