If you’ve come to Sicily to sleep in till noon, wander around quaint old villages, lie supine on the sand, or flavor your acqua frizzante with lemons you’ve picked straight from the tree, you’re not going to hang around Palermo for long — there are too many idyllic beaches and charming little towns to explore on the island. If you’re spending much time in Sicily’s capital, you’re probably here for the ancient history, or the shopping, or the cuisine — some are even so fortunate as to come here on plain old business. It makes sense, then, that even a traditional Sicilian hotel like Principe di Villafranca is not simply a lazy vacationer’s getaway.

In fact, the hotel, located downtown, just steps away from the city’s fashion district, fairly evenly straddles the line between international and Italian, or — dare we suggest it — between business and pleasure. So while guest rooms, outfitted in bright whites and brushed steel, with flat-screen TVs and eye-catching modern lamps, scream “high-end business hotel,” in the lobby and public spaces, you’ll find traditional Sicilian furniture and oil paintings, even a fireplace.

There’s a modern fitness center, of course, plus wi-fi everywhere, and conference facilities — but the food at the hotel’s restaurant is crafted from the bountiful local produce that’s been growing in the region for literally thousands of years. The flavors, in other words, are traditionally Sicilian, even if the dining experience overall has a more contemporary polish to it.

Walk outside the hotel and you’re right in the bustling heart of the big city. As inside the hotel itself, you don’t have to choose between old and new — if you’re in the mood for contemporary, step into one of the impossibly sleek designer boutiques, but if you’re feeling Sicilia vecchia instead, head straight for the old-fashioned food vendors at the nearby Mercato di Capo, one of the city’s famous outdoor marketplaces.
