In dense, urban Singapore, a rural-resort atmosphere isn’t easy to find. But the Labrador Nature Reserve, ten minutes from Marina Bay and the central business district, is a rare expanse of green — and it’s here, on a compound surrounding a gorgeously restored 1920s building, that you’ll find Villa Samadhi Singapore.
The concept is identical to that of its sister in Kuala Lumpur: a luxury boutique hotel that feels secluded in nature even though it’s minutes from the city life. Its modest size — a mere 20 rooms — ensures that the tranquil spell is never broken. And the rooms themselves, both in the old villa and in the surrounding buildings, are colonial in style, with antique architectural elements and classic furnishings. The comforts, however, are modern, including lavish spa-like bathrooms.
You can expect quite a bit more connection with nature than the typical Singapore hotel; rather than shut out the city traffic you’ll be tempted to leave your windows open to the breeze. Tamarind Hill, the restaurant, occupies its own freestanding bungalow, connected to the main hotel via a jungle boardwalk, and serves upscale, contemporary Thai dishes as well as Shan, a subtype of Burmese cuisine.
