The Best Michelin Hotels for Seeing The Northern Lights

Discover our best hotels for action-packed days and cosy nights watching the aurora borealis, the world's most stunning natural light display.

Seeing one of nature's most awe-inspiring phenomena, the Northern Lights, is a once-in-a-lifetime event for many. Not so if you live in the Nordic Countries. Here, from late September to early April, when the nights are at their longest and the skies are at their darkest, residents are in with a good chance of witnessing this mesmerising spectacle on a regular basis.

From pale greens and yellows to vibrant pinks, reds and purples, the shimmering waves of colour that pop against this velvet backdrop are the result of charged particles from the sun colliding with the magnetic field of the Earth. The most common colour to see is green, which is created by the particles colliding with oxygen at high altitudes; more rare and intense shades like red or purple occur when the particles interact with either oxygen or nitrogen at lower altitude levels. The intensity and colour of the aurora depends on solar activity, which fluctuates in an 11-year cycle until its peak at the solar maximum, with stronger displays often occurring during periods of heightened solar storms.

And it just so happens that 2024 and 2025 will deliver some of the best displays of the current cycle. So the only thing left to do it to decide whether to gaze up from a glass igloo in Finnish Lapland, check the skies from a hotel made of ice in northern Sweden, keep lookout from a dormant lava field in Iceland or scan the horizon from the comfort of your armchair from a peaceful island in Norway.

While witnessing the Northern Lights can feel like a dream come true, as with all natural phenomena, there's no guarantee that the aurora borealis will grace you with its presence, so along with snowy fairy tale landscapes, you'll find that these hand-picked hotels also offer their own incredible attractions. Not only is there something about such remote locations that inspires some of the continent's most whimsical and creative architecture, but the pristine landscapes bring with them their own unique fascinations, allowing the hotels to offer some once in-a-lifetime experiences.

Read on to discover where to cosy up, get out and about, and turn your eyes to the skies, with our specially curated selection of Michelin hotels.
