MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Astoria is a sultry and sexy rookie to Dupont Circle and stands out from its neighboring facades with its gleaming glass panes etched with the name printed in gold leaf. If you can't stand the heat, then shy away from this scorcher, since they dole out some seriously fiery fare. Dan dan noodles are creamy and savory, while the chili wontons are bursting with pork and bobbing in a tongue-numbing sauce. Tuck into the tender water-boiled beef dish, a brisket with just the right balance. Mapo tofu is well-prepared and delivers less of a kick but all the flavor, while the crunch of the walnut shrimp is offset by the creamy sauce. The sober soup is a satisfying bowl of thick broth loaded with cellophane-thin pork wontons.
