MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

It's hard to hush the honking cars outside, but step inside only to be greeted by some of the most personable waitstaff in town. On the second floor of the ModernHaus hotel, the décor is dramatic yet breezy, thanks to soft lights, banquettes and greenery galore. A fantastic "veranda" with a retractable roof is ideal when the weather is right.
Keeping company with this convivial setting is a range of accessible fare, like 'nduja with béchamel, burrata and honey. Coupled with fresh-baked flatbreads, it makes a heady affair. Salt cod-and-potato croquettes may follow with smoked paprika mayo; then chicken confit with chorizo is Chef George Mendes' take on paella. Don't leave without purchasing an artisan item (an olive oil or salt, perhaps?) from Veranda Provisions.
