Delamore Lodge
The villa's plan was inspired by the shape of the matau, the traditional bone fishhook of the Maori people — and while the sandy plasterwork recalls a Tuscan villa, there is not a single square wall in the place. Instead the plan is all curving walls and a gently sloping roof, blending with the graceful curves of the hillside. And on this perch above the bay, the views are of prime importance — all four suites are on the bayward side, with private patios and picture windows, and even the tubs and open showers have views.
The atmosphere is exceedingly exclusive and private, as the hotel can only accommodate a maximum of eight guests. Those fortunate eight, though, will enjoy amenities befitting a much larger resort, from the grotto-like Jacuzzi and sauna complex to the full-service spa and massage treatments. The chef will serve up your fresh catch, if you're one for fishing, or else will make do with the island's local ingredients, including herbs and vegetables from the hotel's own gardens, as well as vintages from the local vineyards. It's a surprisingly sophisticated culinary experience, with the added advantages of privacy and a gorgeous natural setting. Almost too good to be true.
