You truly can’t swing a stick in Vienna without hitting a spot of historical import. Take the façade of Marxergasse 17: jewel of the Vienna Secession, last remnant of the Sofiensäle music hall, erstwhile favorite of Strauss, and the new face of Ruby Sofie Vienna. Smack in the middle of the burgeoning Landstraße district, the hotel is ideally located with respect to a host of magisterial Baroque landmarks, though secluded enough to ensure the necessary peace and quiet.

Lean luxury — “you want no less, but you also want no more” — steers the ship at Ruby Sofie. They make no secret of that philosophy, thereby pulling off the hat trick of thrift, forthrightness, and glamour. Crucially, it never comes off forced, but it also demands a mindful approach from what will likely be a young, design-conscious traveler seeking an affordable price point. The reception desk, for example, is packaged into the 24/7 bar and café, and they’ve made the choice to forgo room service as well as a fitness center and a full-service restaurant.

Which isn’t to say that you’ll be confined to spartan accommodations; the rooms themselves testify as much, oases of soft light in contrast to public spaces’ darker, brooding SoHo mattes. Minimalist, uncluttered, and airy, they match naturally stained oak and limestone with substantial windows and clean stretches of hardwood flooring. Walk-in showers include rain showers and a proprietary line of bath amenities, and many guests will love the large flat-screens, in-room tablets, and extra-long beds. A musical sub-theme livens things up: wall art, various decorative knick-knacks, even Marshall amplifiers from which you can tune in to Ruby Sofie’s house radio station. Their mesh and chrome highlights pair particularly well with the rooms’ lamps and shower fixtures.

Ultimately, Ruby Sofie’s quirky extras redeem the omission of extravagant luxury features. Guitars are available for rental should you be so inclined, and they’re happy to offer wi-fi and bikes at no cost. There’s also a meditation room and a library with public-use iMacs on the mezzanine. On the fifth floor, a galley kitchen substitutes for a minibar, complete with a hot-drink station and a vending machine stocked with all manner of travel necessities. Think of the hotel as more of a chic way station than luxury escapism. Now go crash some castle tours.
