Plenty of hotels are palace-like in one way or another, but Hotel Vestibul Palace, in Split’s picturesque historic center, is the real deal. It’s one of a kind, constructed from elements of the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, and today it’s an uncanny sight, with modern construction bridging the literal gaps between limestone walls of Roman, Gothic and Renaissance antiquity. The suites’ decor is tastefully unobtrusive, leaving space for the gorgeous masonry, preferring history to speak for itself. It does bear mentioning, though, that the rooms’ furniture is strikingly modern, befitting a contemporary luxury boutique hotel. Vestibul’s own Magnus restaurant extends the royal treatment into dining, with elegant takes on Adriatic favorites.
