MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Only recently has Mexico gone from spring break to sophisticated — and if we're asked who is behind its miraculous transition, we'd have to say that Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort, is a major player. Certainly, Las Ventanas has its location to its advantage. Previously only occupied by the odd margarita bar, Los Cabos is both lively and unspoiled. It has a bit of everything — lapis waters, mountains, desert, and soft sand. It also gets 350 days of sun a year, which is bad for the farmers, but great for anyone looking to catch a tan.

Then there are the rooms, the smallest of which is over 900 square feet. They include Jacuzzi tubs, your own (semi-) private spot of a pool, adobe fireplaces, slippers woven out of sea grass, and floors and headboards inlaid traditionally with pebbles. Most suites boast their own terrace and some feature open air showers, but if you're especially lucky, you'll get an open-air tub and be able to soak in scented bubbles under the night sky.

The spa boasts holistic therapies from corners of the world that you didn't even know existed. Not just mud wraps and hot stones — try the healing crystals and Javanese massage and skin-care therapy that they give to brides before their wedding day. The beach, on the other hand, is less of a draw, for unless you are a strong swimmer, the surf is pretty rough. At Las Ventanas, however, this is not a problem. The fresh water infinity edge pool is almost as large as the ocean — certainly it's the largest in the country — and sports its own swim-up bar. And while swimming, you can gaze seaward and pretend, at least, that you're in with the porpoises.

Then there are the stars. Every room comes with its own telescope but star watching here comes in many varieties. If you're not focusing your telescope on Bono and Cindy Crawford, you may be focusing it on the semi-nude Venus by the pool, or the frolicking couple next door. Barring that, however, you might want to turn it onto the sky. They say that the constellations are the most spectacular thing about this place. Which, considering everything else, is a pretty serious statement. You just have to be there to believe it.

How to get there: Las Ventanas is located 20 minutes southwest of San Jose Del Cabo International Airport. Due to local union regulations, transfer in must be reserved 72 hours prior to the arrival date. Local regulations require that departure from the resort be by taxi.
