La Fiermontina, a centuries-old masseria, lives on as a luxury hotel offering an experience approaching that enjoyed by the original Pugliese gentry. Some rooms’ vaulted ceilings are hewn from the soft limestone for which Lecce is known, while others offer a cozy sitting area beneath a timber mezzanine, making a separate, more intimate space of its sleeping quarters. Walls hide away an orchard of olives and oranges, whose shade relieves both those dipping into the pool and those enjoying the rustic tastes of “cucina povera” at the indoor-outdoor restaurant. There’s plenty to do, but don’t miss the private art tours, including a look at the Antonia family’s own collection.
