MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Located at the waterfront Hotel Californian, Blackbird is as attractive as its surroundings. Inside, its décor resembles a meeting of art deco and mid-century styles, with an “air kiss” to the private clubs of yesteryear. Striking arched doors seem to let the sea breeze wash over the room, which is as popular for lingering over cocktails as it is for dinner. The cooking seems to convey an enjoyable play on classics, which may be no surprise given the chef's impressive pedigree. Nowhere is this more deliciously clear than in the green gazpacho comprised of cucumber, papaya and avocado, topped with sweet crabmeat and a bit of curried yogurt. Also sample the wonderfully fresh oysters, almost pearl-like when crowned with a smoky mignonette.
