Masala y Maíz, the provocative and popular Mexico City restaurant recently awarded One MICHELIN Star, is hosting an “Eat What You Want, Pay What You Can Day” on August 27.
The concept, from chef-owners Norma Listman and Saqib Keval, comes as the cost of living in the capital city has skyrocketed in parts, upending the lives of many long-time residents.
“It was the answer to pamper our community,” Listman said in a statement. “We were all going through a super difficult time and we wanted to share what we do, taking out the stress of the economic exchange.”
“Restaurants, fondas, street stalls, cafes, bakeries and bars are places of joy and spaces for social gathering and cultural exchange,” the statement from the restaurant continued.
Masala y Maíz, with dishes that blend the Mexican, Indian and East African backgrounds of the husband and wife team, has worn its progressive values on its sleeve since it opened in 2017.
On its menu, the owners have printed messages condemning white supremacy and anti-Muslim policies in India. The restaurant, recently re-opened in a new space in Mexico City's bustling historic center, closes at 6 p.m. nightly in part to afford its staff more decent working hours.

The restaurant has hosted several “Eat What You Want” days over the years. Wednesday’s edition comes amid a growing protest movement in the city aimed at the gentrification that advocates and analysts say is behind some of the rising costs.
Wednesday’s event also marks the first time that other restaurants around the city (plus one in the city of Mérida, Mexico) will participate in the initiative. The full list, which includes three spots from the MICHELIN Guide Mexico City selection – Expendio de Maíz (One MICHELIN Star), Baldío (MICHELIN Green Star) and Malix – is available here on the restaurant’s Instagram page.
