Reykjavík’s Art Deco Hotel Borg, the city’s (and country’s) original luxury hotel, is as central as it gets: right on the Austurvöllur square, across from the parliament building and the cathedral. These days it’s operated by Keahotels, the group responsible for many of Iceland’s better hotels, and it benefits from their boutique-hotel experience. The experience is still unmistakably high-end, though, from the Hästens mattresses and Nespresso machines to the elaborate Borg Spa. Unusually, it foregoes an official restaurant, but Jamie’s Italian is set in the same building, and its sister hotel, the Apotek, has a fine restaurant and bar of its own, just two doors away.
