But in its present incarnation as a luxury boutique hotel, it balances this inheritance with a contemporary spirit, thanks in large part to local designers Maison Hand, who have updated its spaces with a combination of vintage pieces, design classics, and modern luxury. With just 21 rooms it’s intimate in scale, and, unusually for a French hotel of this size, it features not just a rich and decadent breakfast but a proper restaurant, the bistronomy-style l’Artichaut.
