Whereas many of Barcelona’s boutique hotels make much of the city’s dark and glamorous side, the hedonistic nightlife that did so much to make it one of the world’s favorite urban escapes. At every turn the ecologically responsible decision has been taken, and what’s perhaps most remarkable is that it doesn’t compromise Hostal Grau’s comfort or style a bit. Organic mattresses, salvaged desks and mirrors, bedside tables made from banana-tree trunks — there’s nothing spartan about it. It’s in the services, however, that Hostal Grau verges on the minimalist. There’s a lounge where you can get a glass of wine or a cup of coffee or a light snack, but beyond that, you’re more or less at the mercy of the city. This being Barcelona, though, you’re in no danger — borrow a bike from reception and experience this lively city at your own pace.
