The name may err on the side of being just a little bit too plain-spoken, but you can’t really fault Luxury Suites Amsterdam for trying — centrally located within Amsterdam’s wistfully gorgeous canal network, these folks are up against stiff competition indeed. They differentiate themselves by maintaining a quiet, buttoned-up vibe, especially in the public spaces, all drop ceilings and designer furniture. The contrast between this converted warehouse’s sleek interiors and the ramshackle charm of the history-drenched canal district could hardly be more pronounced.

That titular luxury shows up in the rooms proper, where padded headboards, fine linens, and elaborately framed mirrors lend a distinctly plush air. The comfortable spaciousness helps immensely, leaving plenty of room on otherwise sterile walls for the odd fine-art print. On the other hand, flatscreens and track lighting sound a thoroughly contemporary note; surprisingly, the kitchenettes include a full fridge and dishwasher (stay a while, why don’t you).

There’s no in-house restaurant, but a modest bar from which you can plot your next expedition to Waterlooplein or Nieuwmarkt or what-have-you. The view of the gabled skyline is best from the penthouse terraces, of course, but you can always arrange a private tour by boat with reception. And, this being Amsterdam, you’ll probably take advantage of on-site bike rental to do as the locals do.
