Cheong Fatt Tze - The Blue Mansion

14, Leith Street, George Town, Malaysia
18 Rooms
Contemporary Classic & Lively
Like the Taj Mahal, The Blue Mansion was inspired by a love story. Cheong Fatt Tze, a wealthy Chinese businessman, built this opulent mansion, located in historic George Town on the Malaysian island of Penang, for one of his wives. Today it’s a luxury hotel that doubles as a museum and occasional film set — you saw it in “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Tinged with virbant indigo, the mansion is majestic inside and out, featuring a series of strikingly picturesque courtyards and fanciful details from Chinese carved screens and colorful mosaic murals to large Gothic windows fitted with Art Nouveau-style stained glass. Guest suites, designed according to the principles of feng shui, are palatial and peaceful. Some have clawfoot tubs and elegant living rooms, others have deep Jacuzzis and gilded beds; all are beautifully appointed and filled with priceless art and antiques.

The hotel restaurant offers gourmet tasting menus, while the sultry bar offers gorgeously presented cocktails and live music sets highlighting the guzheng, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument, after dark.
