Cavita
56-60 Wigmore Street, Marylebone, W1U 2RZ London
£££ · Mexican

Named after Chef-Owner Adriana Cavita, this welcoming Marylebone spot has a wonderfully fun, laid-back energy that fits well with its rustic, authentic Mexican cooking. Street food supplies the inspiration for many of the dishes, while others are designed for sharing – so ensure you bring a group to make the most of it. The drinks are a big part of the appeal at many of our favourite Mexican restaurants and Cavita is no different, with El Bar de Cavita in the basement on hand to keep the party going with a range of cocktails and an extensive mezcal selection.

El Pastor
7a Stoney Street, Borough Market, SE1 9AA London
££ · Mexican

There’s a fun, lively energy to this spot near London Bridge and Borough Market, which makes up part of the area’s enticing international tapestry. It’s modelled on the taquerias of Mexico City, with the signature ‘Taco Al Pastor’ of slowly marinated pork shoulder well worth a try. If you’re a fan of Mexican-inspired drinks, then the list of margaritas will leave you umming and ahhing, with the likes of strawberry & basil or avocado & passionfruit catching the eye. For those who prefer their spirits neat, the wide choice of tequilas and mezcals will serve you well.

Fonda
12 Heddon Street, Mayfair, W1B 4BZ London
££ · Mexican

The second London opening from Santiago Lastra – best known for KOL – Fonda occupies a prime two-storey spot on Mayfair’s Heddon Street. There’s a welcome lightness to its stylish décor, with a variety of ceramic tiles adding pops of colour. Unlike its older sibling, there’s no tasting menu here, with most dishes designed for sharing, such as the classic Mexican carnitas. Combined with the lively hum of happy diners echoing around the room, this makes Fonda an ideal place to come with a group and celebrate your latest birthday, promotion or just a regular Tuesday.

KOL
9 Seymour Street, Marylebone, W1H 7BA London
££££ · Mexican

For a few years now, KOL has been the gold standard for Mexican cuisine, not just in London, but in the whole of the UK. As the only Mexican restaurant in the country with a MICHELIN Star, it is an undoubtedly impressive and understandably popular place – making getting a table here trickier than ever. It’s well worth the wait, however, with Chef Santiago Lastra pioneering a menu characterised by both its creative approach and its commitment to using only British ingredients. That means no citrus fruits – a key part of many Mexican menus – with ingenious substitutes like sea buckthorn used in their place.

Santo Remedio
152 Tooley Street, Southwark, SE1 2TU London
££ · Mexican

Even among London’s Mexican restaurants, Santo Remedio stands out as a wondrously colourful place. From the dishes to the décor, there is a vibrancy and buzz to the whole operation that’s charmingly contagious. On the menu, those less familiar with the cuisine may be drawn to the selection of tacos and taco-adjacent picks, but don’t miss out on the regional specialities, such as guacamole enlivened by the addition of grasshoppers – a distinctly Oaxacan touch. As for the drinks? They’re best enjoyed during bottomless brunch on the weekends.
