Elegância Tradicional e Alegre
The Hotel Nacional de Cuba has been one of Havana’s great symbols for nearly a century, and it’s had a more colorful history than most luxury hotels. Founded just before the 1933 coup, it went through something of a golden age in the Forties and Fifties — you may remember it from the second of the Godfather films. After the Revolution it went generally the way of Cuban tourism in general — which accounts for the preserved-in-amber feeling of the Nacional today. And with tourism once again on the rise, it’s possible for a whole new generation to tread the same corridors where Churchill, Hemingway, Sinatra, even Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir once walked.

There’s no mistaking the grand scale of the place, and if the fixtures and fittings aren’t exactly up to international five-star standard, it would be churlish to be surprised. Neither the boutique-hotel style revolution nor the dramatic surge in ultra-luxe hospitality have made their way to these shores yet. It’s tempting to imagine what might become of the Nacional in years to follow, but for now the key to its appeal is the feeling of watching history pass by right before your eyes.
