Memmo Alfama

You knew Lisbon was getting hip, but this is ridiculous. The lovingly restored 19th-century building that houses Memmo Alfama could hardly be more gorgeous, the neighborhood of Alfama itself is impossibly historic and atmospheric, and the interiors are warm, welcoming, and impeccably well-composed. And that’s before you even begin to take stock of the views from the uniquely situated hillside location.

Some rooms look into interior courtyards, others over the river, still others the picturesque rooftops of the city. Still others, under the mansard roof, have no view to speak of. But everyone’s equal on the rooftop — the terrace and the infinity pool take in a truly extraordinary panorama. This, naturally, is where the social life of the hotel happens; in the evening the wine bar sets up shop, to take advantage of the spectacular scenery.

Fundamentally it’s a comfortable boutique hotel, rather than a proper luxury boutique. This place isn’t about pampering you senseless — rather, it’s about providing guests a memorable experience. It’s right there in the name — Memmo — and on the evidence, they got the name, as with so much else, exactly right.
