The August House
Nova Scotia, CanadaThe current owners of this historic Italianate mansion in Windsor – a survivor of the 1897 fire – transformed it into a boutique inn called August House after a restorative trip to Italy, where they encountered the slow-living virtues of the country’s best hospitality.
NABOA Hotel Tulum
Tulum, MexicoIt takes something special to stand out in boutique-hotel-saturated Tulum, but NABOA has what it takes. It's authentically high-end, and authentically local. The idea is slow living, Riviera Maya style. To that end, the 10 suites are solidly built and exquisitely private, even though their spaces are open.
Devasom Khao Lak Beach Resort
Khao Lak, ThailandSet on a spectacular beach on the Andaman side of the Thai mainland, Devasom Khao Lak is an ultra-luxe seaside resort in the contemporary-classic mold — the style is full of references to local tradition, and though it’s new, its architecture includes salvaged elements that are in some cases hundreds of years old.
Hotel Nesslerhof
Großarl, AustriaThe high-elevation village of Grossarl is home to several luxurious lodges, but the Nesslerhof, considered one of the best spa hotels in the Austrian Alps, has an edge over its neighbors. The main draw is an expansive wellness area; luminous rooms with native wood paneling are also a big part of the appeal.
Knockinaam Lodge Hotel
Scotland, UKThe spectacular west coast of Scotland is arguably the main attraction here, though Knockinaam Lodge is entirely worthy of its setting. This 19th-century house stands just steps from a private cove on the Irish Sea, and feels perhaps more remote than it is — guests are here to properly get away.
Sir Prague
Prague, Czech RepublicA well-preserved 19th-century building next to the Vltava River contains one of Prague’s most unique boutique hotels. Sir Prague is the work of Linda Boronkay, who drew inspiration from the city’s Gothic architecture and the heritage of Czech Cubism. The result is a series of spaces quite unlike any other.
Hotel ChristiAnia
South Tyrol, ItalyA classic Alpine lodge and a chic contemporary addition make up Hotel ChristiAnia, a luxury boutique hotel in the picturesque Val Badia. The experience within its walls is similarly a meeting of old and new — it contains a mere 10 rooms and suites, including one named for its most famous occupant, Winston Churchill.
Carbis Bay Hotel
Carbis Bay, UKWith 125 acres of land, sweeping sea views, a watersports center, and restaurants serving up seafood on or by the sands, Carbis Bay Hotel is home to many of the Cornish attractions that continue to pull tourists to the shores of St Ives. Room options range from the 19th-century Main House to Beach and Valley cottages.
Farmhouse Paso Robles
Paso Robles, CA, USAThere’s no law that says a boutique adaptation of a 1950s motor lodge has to go in for mid-century modernist nostalgia. The motel that’s now Farmhouse Paso Robles was designed in a country-cottage style, matching what draws most of the region’s 21st-century visitors: a booming trade in wine production.
Hotel Cèsar Lanzarote
Tías, SpainOn the volcanic island of Lanzarote, the family home of César Manrique has been rebirthed as Hotel Cesar. The renowned Spanish sculptor would no doubt be thrilled with how his namesake hotel pays tribute to local art and the surrounding landscape, which is on uninterrupted view throughout the property.
