If Catalonia’s boutique-size farmhouse hotels aren’t as famous as their counterparts in Provence or Tuscany it’s not because Hotel Mas del Sol isn’t pulling its weight. This lovely little escape lies just over an hour’s drive up the Costa Brava from Barcelona, and then a bit inland — enough to offer day-trip access to the coast while remaining blissfully untroubled by tourism.
The heart of the place is a 14th-century stone farmhouse, and a handsome one at that. But the style here is far from medieval. A contemporary design sensibility brightens the rooms and suites with graphic wallpapers and modern furniture; most of the rooms and suites are housed in newer buildings, though a handful are set in the original house, and their up-to-date comforts happily coexist with the weathered stone walls. Breakfast is served outdoors, weather permitting, and with advance notice the Bistro del Sol can prepare dinner for guests as well.
