Nieves Barragán Mohacho’s London: Where Does the Sabor Chef Eat?

With MICHELIN-Starred Sabor still delighting diners, and her new East London restaurant soon to open, we asked Nieves Barragán Mohacho for her London recommendations.

In our regular series, we ask famous chefs and personalities to tell us all about 'their London'. From top tips on where to dine in the city, to their personal haunts ranging from bakeries to book shops, we’ve got the inside track on London’s premier spots from the people who know it best.

Ever since Nieves Barragán Mohacho arrived in London, the city’s Spanish food has been better for it. For a decade she was a key part of the success at Barrafina – a brand now spread all across the capital – and then came Sabor. Winning a MICHELIN Star in its first year, it was Barragán Mohacho striking out on her own to magnificent effect, and seven years later it’s just as delicious. Whether it’s the so-good-you-can’t-stop-ordering tapas or the signature suckling pig (a favourite of the Inspectors), Sabor is a haven for those who love all things Spanish. With her new restaurant, Legado, about to open in Shoreditch, we asked Nieves Barragán Mohacho for her top London recommendations.

What are your favourite restaurants in London?

Row on 5 in Mayfair is one of my favourites. The sleek interior pairs beautifully with a modern British menu. Jason Atherton opened it in November 2024 and I went with my business partner at Christmas – everything was immaculate. Each dish was clean, elegant and executed to perfection. The whole experience was carefully considered: we started with canapés downstairs, were then shown into a private room through a beautiful walk-in cellar and finally dined upstairs overlooking the open kitchen.

I also love A. Wong. Andrew is not only a good friend but also an incredible chef. I often visit his restaurant and I’m always blown away – the flavours are so vibrant and truly authentic to Chinese cuisine.

Kitchen Table is a truly special experience. I love the intimacy of sitting at the horseshoe counter, watching the chefs at work and being part of the creative energy in the room.

Is there somewhere you would recommend for a romantic date?

Benares. I visited recently and the newly renovated space feels so intimate and warm. Plus, I know the chef and he’s fantastic – it’s a great spot for a date night.

Is there a London restaurant you have a personal connection to?

Club Gascon. It’s been around for 25 years and the chef is one of my best friends. We travel together often – there’s a lot of love and memories tied to this place.

Which restaurants are good for a celebration?

Endo at The Rotunda is the perfect setting for a special occasion. Endo-san is a legend.

Where’s good for a night out with friends?

Gymkhana is always fun. The food is amazing and perfect for groups – their tasting menu is available for up to 16 guests, and they even have a private vault you can book.

Where do you go for a quick bite?

Berenjak is a brilliant spot for a quick, flavourful meal. They usually have space for walk-ins, and I love their unique take on Persian food.

Now for some non-restaurant recommendations in London. What is your favourite…

Bakery?

TOAD in Peckham. You must try Millie Lagares’ Japanese curry pastry if it’s available – filled with beef curry, melting cheese, pickled daikon and carrot flowers in a croissant basket. So good.

Café?

Nola in Peckham has great croissants, nice coffee and big windows that fill the place with light. A lovely way to start the day.

Pub?

The Devonshire. It’s just five minutes from Sabor, which is very convenient! I’m friends with Oisín [Rogers] – what he’s created here is incredible. It’s always packed, but if you can sneak into the back room, it’s such a cosy spot. Every visit gets better.

Bar or cocktail spot?

Three Sheets in Soho has perfect cocktails and is always a great time.

Market?

Brockley Market is a favourite weekend ritual. I love browsing around with a coffee in hand.

Sustainable spot?

Silo. This is what true sustainability looks like. I admire the chef and his commitment so much.

Green space?

One Tree Hill Park. I live in Honor Oak and try to stay local on weekends. I love walking to the top of the hill to take in the sweeping views of London.

Area of London?

East Dulwich. I often spend my weekends here, browsing independent shops and enjoying the local vibe.

Hotel?

The Peninsula London (with Claude Bosi) is so impressive. A beautiful place with so much attention to detail.

Thing to do?

I love cycling around Richmond. In just 20 minutes from central London, you’re surrounded by greenery and wildlife. Spotting the deer never gets old – it’s my go-to way to unwind.

Electric Cinema. You can have dinner and champagne before settling into a film. I love the whole experience.

Bookshop?

Books for Cooks. When I first moved to London, friends told me to visit this place. I bought my first cookbook here – Rick Stein’s – and started learning who the best chefs in the UK were. It’s a special place.
