Some classic grand hotels have gone in for a full luxury-boutique makeover; others have modernized at a more measured pace. And some have gone out of their way to retain their original charm. Hotel Dollenberg was rebuilt in 1980 and renovated in 2011, but it remains absolutely true to its classic inspiration. It also remains refreshingly family-owned and -operated — all the more impressive given its status as one of the region’s most beloved lodgings.
The accommodations range from double rooms all the way up to luxury suites, omitting the too-small singles that are a staple of European luxury hotels. The doubles aren’t vast, but they’re spacious enough, and certainly more than comfortable enough — at all levels the experience is a thoroughly luxurious one. Views vary, but most face either the vineyard or the valley.
With 89 rooms and suites the Dollenberg is relatively modest in scale, but that doesn’t stop it from expanding in other areas. The spa, a 2011 addition, is enormous, with 17 treatment rooms and a 4,000-square-meter terrace; the hotel itself is set on a vast parcel of parkland, crisscrossed by more than ten kilometers of walking trails. And while no resort of this type would skimp on the cuisine, the Dollenberg comes in for special notice; among its dining venues is the two-Michelin-star Le Pavillon.
