The Most Affordable Key Hotels in the World

Some MICHELIN-Key hotels can cost thousands per night. These are the others — affordable standouts of such quality and value they tend to inspire trips themselves.

Our Inspectors hand-select the most outstanding hotels in the world for the MICHELIN Key distinction — and it’s natural that the most expensive tend to draw the most eyes. Places like Amangiri or Cheval Blanc Paris are well worth their nightly rates in the thousands, but among the One- and Two-Key hotels in particular are gems between $150 and $250 per night, full of the kind of outsize character and experiences that define a Key at any price.

The hotels below, in cities and countryside across six continents, tend to inspire trips on their own. To us, they’re worth planning around — and they’re definitely worth a look.

EUROPE

Excellence in design and dining at Europe's most affordable escapes.

Le Clair de la Plume, Grignan, FranceJust over the border from Provence and surrounded by a medieval castle and fields of lavender, the 16-room hotel offers spa treatments, two pools, easy access to the historic small town and a One-MICHELIN-Star restaurant. As if the scenery and gastronomy weren't enough, there’s also the price: Barring the odd week in July, this hotel typically sits around $200 per night.

La Barchessa di Villa Pisani, Vicenza, Italy: With an estate that includes a Palladian villa designed by Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio himself, the 15-room hotel combines a modern art collection, a creative restaurant and a dreamy outdoor pool. With rates around $170 all year long, it’s a bargain for lovers of architecture and within easy reach of must-see cities like Verona and Venice, both about an hour’s drive away.

Dexamenes Seaside Hotel, on the grounds of a converted winery in Greece.

Dexamenes Seaside Hotel, Peloponnese, Greece: Some rooms are set inside actual former wine tanks. Perched just off the shoreline of the Ionian Sea, the handful of rooms come with dramatic views in a region dotted with ancient sites. Outside the peak July and August weeks (the hotel operates seasonally, from April to mid-October), nightly rates often fall in the $160–$200 range.

Can Mascort Eco Hotel, Costa Brava, Spain: In a region known for beach resorts, the 15-room hotel in a centuries-old butter-yellow townhouse is decorated by historic frescoes and vaulted ceilings, with low-impact practices that complement the nearby beaches and on-site Roman bath-inspired caldarium. Rates typically range between $170 and $250 year-round, for what may be the most approachable hotel on one of Spain’s most remarkable coastlines.

Widmann’s Löwen, Königsbronn, Germany: Set amid a UNESCO-protected mountain range, the family-run, alpine-chic Widmann’s Löwen is worth a trip for the restaurant alone — if not the hiking and bike trails. The One-Star and Green-Star Ursprung restaurant presents the mountains on a plate, showcasing hyperlocal producers in a minimalist setting. Basic rooms start at about $150 per night, while the high-design chalets are more of a splurge.

NORTH AMERICA

Unexpected value in city and countryside escapes across the United States and Mexico.

Esmé Miami Beach, Miami, USA: Esmé offers something uniquely intimate and soulful: a village of buildings, tucked away from the heavy tourism of Ocean Drive. It's a Mediterranean-inspired retro reverie of palm-lined courtyards, hip rooms, restaurants and a saltwater rooftop pool. Rooms start at $70 per night in the off-season and seldom top $250, well under the sky-high Miami standard.

The Hornibrook Mansion Empress of Little Rock, Arkansas, USA: If Little Rock wasn’t on your radar, it should be now. A stately Victorian mansion with Gothic Queen Anne flourishes, this bed-and-breakfast in the history-rich capital of Arkansas drips with period romance, perfect for a few days of living like an empress. It's one of the few Two-Key properties in the region with rooms running between $200 and $250 per night.

Las Casas B+B Hotel, Cuernavaca, Mexico: With a year-round mild climate, locals know Cuernavaca as a favorite day trip about an hour’s drive from Mexico City. The 11-room hotel, hidden down a charming alley in the historic center, makes a good case for staying the night, with a backyard pool surrounded by greenery, black-and-white interiors and a nightly rate almost always under $200.

Hotel Peter and Paul, New Orleans, USA: This former 19th-century church is one of the city’s most atmospheric stays, providing homey and ecstatically designed NOLA sophistication in a town where the hard partying can sometimes overshadow such nuance. Set in the quieter Faubourg Marigny district, rooms typically range from $180–$230 outside of winter and major events such as Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest.

Inn at Thorn Hill, New Hampshire: A mountain hideaway with wood-burning fireplaces, soaking tubs, woodsy views, a spa, restaurant and award-winning cocktails. Find midweek dates between $180 and $230 per night, but note that foliage and ski weekend rates can jump higher. For a Two-Key property that’s worth planning a romantic weekend around, this is outstanding value in most months and a beautiful destination in any season.

Adventure and cultural immersion in the best value Key escapes in South and Central America.

Chic cabins immerse guests in a protected forest and add spa, restaurant and exclusive access to a centuries-old hiking trail. Rates hover around $200 a night or significantly lower year-round.

La Lancha, El Remate, Guatemala: The Mayan ruins of Tikal are an hour’s drive from Francis Ford Coppola’s Central American hideaway, the third in a series of accommodations that always incorporate their founder’s flair for the cinematic in his design and public spaces. With One Key and perched upon the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, an enchanting ten rooms and casitas soar above the rainforest, with a restaurant, bar, pool and bocce court to set the mood. A luxury boutique full of character and comfort and an excellent base for exploring the town, nearby crater lakes and waterfalls. Rates start at $215 per night.

Gaia River Lodge, Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Belize: Peak rates jump higher than many of the hotels in this section, but this remote, luxe, Two-Key lodge in the Belizean rain forest is sheer value. Set in the country’s largest national park, guests enjoy a natural pool, treehouse-style restaurant and an endless amount of the adventure and archaeological activities. Rates start in the mid $200s, and even in the high season rarely rise far above $350 per night.

Shanghai Wonderland, an architectural marvel on the outskirts of Shanghai.

Sala Lodges, Siem Reap, Cambodia: Angkor Wat draws the crowds, but a 20-minute drive away is another gem: the One-Key Sala Lodges. Here, 11 wooden houses from the Cambodian countryside have been painstakingly transported here, luxuriously restored, and hoisted onto stilts for optimal views of the picturesque surroundings. Palm trees encase the restaurant and spa, and bespoke tours showcase the best of Siem Reap’s spiritual attractions. Nights hover around $250 or less year-round.

InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, Shanghai, China: Plunging nearly 300-feet into a former rock quarry on the outskirts of Shanghai, the two lowest levels of this One-Key engineering marvel actually submerge underwater, so windows double as an aquarium. Those suites will run you higher than the approximately $250 per night of the standard rooms, but the remaining 16 floors feature their own dramatic views and access to world-class spa, floating terrace and adjacent – yes – Smurfs Theme Park.

RAAS Devigarh, Udaipur, India: The restored 18th-century palace is sprawling — a One-Key hotel with 39 suites, spa, restaurant, bar, and multiple private dining venues — and brims with regal details like the traditional jharoka windows, ante-chamber mirrors, garden courtyards and spiraling turrets. Prices go higher than the typical hotel on this list during peak winter season, but look here for off-season or shoulder season travel for rates that begin at $200 per night.

Luxury and creativity at the most affordable Key hotels in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.

Fairmont Nile City, Cairo, Egypt: For a trip to the pyramids, the Fairmont Nile City is easily the most affordable of Inspectors’ four One-Key hotels in Cairo. With more than 500 rooms and a vantage point above the Nile River, views are indulgent, and so are the dining options — some ten restaurants and bars join a rooftop pool, spa and even golf packages at rates that hover around $200 a night all year.

IZZA Marrakech, Marrakech, Morocco: Fourteen rooms, three courtyards and a panoramic rooftop are but mere details at Izza, where Marrakech’s creative energy converges in seven interlinked riads, a cozy refuge of whitewashed walls, mustard accents and emerald tiles. Tucked in the bustling Medina, this One-Key hotel and community hub encourages a particularly social atmosphere through shared dining and art events. Rates begin around $250 per night.

Michlifen Resort & Golf, Ifrane, Morocco: Picture Morocco and you think desert: but here, in what is dubbed “Little Switzerland,” is a retreat that feels more like an Alpine experience. This authentic, opulent and One-Key hotel in Morocco's Middle Atlas Mountains features panoramic elevators that connect the refined lobby to 71 guest rooms, all styled to replicate American and European lodges. Travelers flock to Ifrane for winter skiing and summer countryside escapes, which makes shoulder season rates the most affordable, at approximately $250 a night.

Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria at San Stefano, Alexandria, Egypt: Egypt’s coastline is among the most spectacular in Africa, and the Four Seasons in Alexandria claims this excellent location for its typically decadent offerings, including 118 rooms, a collection of restaurants and bars, and among the country’s largest spas. Flanked by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean and the vibrant metropolis of Alexandria, a tunnel connects guests to a private beach. Rates begin at approximately $300 a night throughout the year.

Anantara Sahara Tozeur Resort, Tozeur, Tunisia: $500 nightly rates in the peak December months might exclude our only Key hotel in Tunisia from this list, and we won’t expect you to brave the summer heat for the lowest rates — which can drop to $200. But with prices, and temperatures, often in between the two extremes throughout the year, this hidden gem of an Anantara is a special gateway to Maghreb tradition in the middle of the Sahara.

Oceania

Historic and contemporary glamor at the top affordable Keys in Australia and New Zealand.

1 Hotel Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia: It’s one of the first Keys awarded in Australia for a reason: the 1 Hotel brand is a leader in everything from design to amenities to dining, and puts its sustainable mission on full display with plenty of greenery. The Melbourne iteration leads in those same categories, but at prices significantly lower than its counterparts — riverside guest room rates hover in the $200s per night, and a vibrant downtown location puts you a stone’s throw from graffiti-laden Hosier Lane, a pulsing night market, and endless sandy beaches.

The Henry Jones Art Hotel, Hobart, Australia: Tasmania’s capital city is all about history, food, wine and nature — and this One-Key, in what was once a series of rowhomes and a jam factory — is a spectacular, industrial-chic boutique from which to discover it. The hotel itself sports a harborside location, an onsite art museum, fine dining restaurants, hip cocktail bars and state-of-the-art meeting rooms that cater to business travelers. Rates start at $160 per night.

Gibbston Valley Lodge and Spa, wine country luxury in New Zealand.

Crystalbrook Albion, Sydney, Australia: Tucked away from the crowds of Downtown Sydney, the charming, cozy, eclectic and stylish suburb of Surry Hills lures for its superb dining and bold nightlife. One-Key Crystalbrook Albion is the biggest surprise here, away from the typical tourist circuit, a brick, gothic-style landmark with funky contemporary interiors and rates under $250 in the busy summer season.

Park Hyatt Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand: An infinity pool, hydrotherapy spa, rooftop bar and Le Labo amenities compliment your stay at Park Hyatt on Auckland’s bustling waterfront, and for a name synonymous with luxury, off-season pricing that begins at $215 is nothing to scoff at. There’s rarely a bad time to visit New Zealand, an oasis of outdoor adventure and urban delights — stop at this Park Hyatt for a rare moment of calm.

Gibbston Valley Lodge and Spa, Queenstown, New Zealand: Rolling hills of Queensland’s vineyards serve as the backdrop to 24 villas — each with a private courtyard — and vinotherapy spa, restaurant, movie theater and wine cellar. March to May in New Zealand is ideal for wine tasting, and while stays at Gibbston Valley Lodge and Spa start higher than many hotels on this list, at $330/night they’re a steal for such a unique destination. A handful of neighboring properties may match the price, but few will match this level of luxury.
